Garments washing is the process to improve hand feel, appearance and better outlook of garments. That’s why washing plays a vital role in garments manufacturing. Because of various washing defect, rejection of garments increases. We need to reduce the rate of washing defects/faults at a minimum level. Rejection increases the cost of overall manufacturing. For this reason, reducing washing faults is the major concern for all apparel manufacturing industry. One major KPI points are to reduce washing rejection in the apparel industry. I made a list of all types of garments washing defects so that you may have a better idea of garments defects.

If garments or any parts of garments discolored in washing it’s called discoloration. It is one of the common defect problems.

Care Label Fading or Damage

Care label is an important part of garments. Sometimes label fades or damage in washing.

Off shade

All garments have an original buyer required shade/color standard. If washing fails to meet shade standard then it is considered as off shade defect.

Over Washing

There a certain limit of garments washing time and temperature. Crossing washing limit is considered as over washing and defects have arisen for this is known washing defects of over washing.

Creating a spot in washing is called washing spot defect.

High pH Level

pH level crossed the level of higher pH limit. pH level is the most important factor in garments washing. For higher level, pH quality of garments may reduce.

Poor Grinding

Because of improper grinding, more or less grinding than the requirement.

Lycra Out

Damage Lycra or Lycra coming out in the washing of spandex fabric.

Poor Sand Blasting

Improper sandblasting, more or less sandblasting than the requirement.

High Abrasion Effect

Much abrasion effect than the requirement.

Color Bleeding at Pocket Bag and Label

Generally, different fabric uses for a pocket bag and labels in any garments. Due to garments body, fabric and pocket bag fabric is different, color bleeding occurred frequently in pocket bag and label.

Washing Mark

Garments marked in different washing stages, by the different washing machine, dryer. Long spot mark created in any process of washing is called washing mark defects.

Sand Blasting Washing

Sand blasting is a mechanical dry washing process by which AL2O3 is passing through a nozzle with the help of high-speed compress air. Doll can be used for this type of washing.  Basically sandblasting is used in heavy garments like; denim, twill, Canvas, corduroy etc.

Sandblasting is performed combined with the wash like; Bleach wash, Normal / Rinse wash, Stone enzyme wash, tinting/ dying, Stonewash etc.

The objective of Sand Blasting

  1. The main objective of sandblasting washing is to color fading from the specific surface area on the garments.
  2. For making fashionable apparel.

Principles of Sand Blasting

Al203 is passed through a nozzle with the help of compress air. So rubbing is occurred and color is fade from the specific area on the apparel surface.

Precaution of Sand Blasting

Proper protection is needed for the operator so that any threat can be avoided

  1. Protection eyeglass,
  2. Using mask,
  3. Earplug,
  4. Should use a helmet, Cap.
  5. Using apron

The procedure of Sand Blasting

A standard process flow of sand blasting washing is as flows: Close Chamber => Table => Place Apparel => Sand Blasting => Color Fading => Apparel Washing.

Demerits/Disadvantage of Sand Blasting

  1. Not Environment-friendly
  2. Health hazardous, harmful for an operator
  3. There is a chance of fabric damage

Nowadays Sand Blasting Washing process is isolate due to health hazardous, it may cause cancer. On the other hand, buyers do not prefer this type of washing because of health issue.

Garments Washing:

Normally we use the word ‘washing’ to mean cleaning. But in case of garments, washing is not limited to this function. For garments, washing is not only required for cleaning but also required for improving fabric quality, increase softness of fabric, reduce shrinkage, removing of dirt and for creating color effects. In other sense washing is a technique which used to remove impurities dirt, dust, oil etc. from the surface of garments, softness feeling of cloths, outlook fashion of the apparel and increasing color fastness.

Classification of Garments Washing

According to the process of washing, garments washing is basically of two types; one is wet process and other is dry process.

Objectives of Garments Washing

Though garments washing is done to meet several objectives, but among those followings are the most common.

  • To remove size materials
  • Impurities remove
  • To increase color fastness
  • For color fading
  • For soft hand feel
  • Fashion Garments.

Chemicals use for Garments Washing

Several chemicals are used for garments washing. Here is the list of chemicals use in garments washing.

  • Detergent
  • Bleaching agent ( H2O2, KMNO4)
  • Acid ( Acetic acid, phosphoric acid)
  • Desizing agent
  • Softener
  • Enzime ( Bio- Chemicals)
  • Anti-staining agent
  • Soda
  • Salts Etc.

Washing plant of Garments

Washing plant can be automated, semi-automated. An engineer is responsible for all process to control such as Garments, m/c, H2O, Chemicals, PH etc.

  • Temperature up to 60̊ C
  • Time Up to 60 min
  • PH
  • Concentration of chemicals Up to 15 g/L

Process Flow of Garments Washing

Batch selection => Loading into washing m/c => M: L (add water) => M/c running => Add chemical at adjust temp. and set time => Drain out => Hot wash/ cold wash => Softening => Unload => Hydro extracting => Drying => Quality check => Finishing
